Swifter punishment for Judges, Juries and Journalists in case of sexual offence

In all cases of sexual offence, the media has carried out sustained campaigns and very rightly so to punish the accused. When a member of the same profession gets into the accused box, the punishment should be swift and exemplary. The same yardstick should apply to the member of the judiciary, the legal professional and the police, specially the judiciary since they have handed over extreme punishments of death in rape/murder cases.

People who are public servants or in professions where in the duty is to protect the life and liberty of citizens should face exemplary punishment in case any of them are guilty of perpetrating any act that violates the rights of the citizens and more particularly that of the woman.

Mr Tarun Tejpal had in fact put himself on a pedestal even higher than that of a professional journalist by becoming a self-proclaimed investigative journalist. When such a person has himself admitted to have committed an act which he ostentatiously describes as ‘a bad lapse of judgment, an awful misreading of the situation’, he must be swiftly incarcerated. No Mr Tejpal, you shall not be permitted to get away with ‘penance that lacerates you’ as you have stated in your letter to Ms Shoma Chaudhary.

If there is any shame or remorse left in Mr Tejpal, he should surrender to the law and allow the law to take its own course and not in any manner pressurize the victim to compromise. Perhaps that will set a small example to the elite gentry.

Criminal Acts are neither ‘internal’ matter of a company nor a ‘personal’ problem of a family that can be corrected by negotiations. Mr Tejpal has to face the trial and there cannot be any compromise on that score.
